Questions on Line N: non-EU nationals
Visas, the TIE and its fingerprints, British passports after Brexit: answers for everyone whose passport is not from the EU.
I am not an EU citizen. Do I need a NIE or a TIE?
Both, in a sense: the NIE is your number, and the TIE is the residence card that carries it. If you live in Madrid on a visa or an authorisation, the TIE is the document you hold.
Does a NIE let me work in Madrid?
No. The right to work comes from your visa or authorisation; the NIE only identifies you.
When do I book the fingerprint appointment?
After you arrive in Spain with your visa, or once your authorisation is granted. Book early: in Madrid it is often the hardest slot to find.
Which form goes with the TIE?
The EX-17, with the Modelo 790 código 012 fee. Family members of EU citizens use the EX-19 instead.
I am British. Which route is mine?
Brexit moved UK passports onto Line N. Resident before the transition ended? The Withdrawal Agreement protects you, and your TIE names it. Arrived since? You ride the non-EU route that fits your reason for moving.
Is the golden visa still possible?
No. It was abolished in 2025, and property purchases no longer open a residence route. Ask us which routes do exist for you.
Is travel possible while the card is in production?
Possibly, with an autorización de regreso. Check your case before you book a flight.
Where are TIE cards handed over in Madrid?
According to the Delegación del Gobierno, the Sección de Documentación de Extranjeros at Avenida de los Poblados issues and hands over TIE cards for the city.
