Starting a job in Madrid: the paperwork, in order

Get the NIE first, then the social security number, then a Spanish bank account, then the padrón: each item on HR’s list needs the one before it. A Madrid offer letter tends to arrive with that list, and none of it is hard once the order is right. This is the settling-in line for new hires.

One step after another

  • The NIE: on its own if you are not resident yet, on the EU certificate if you are an EU citizen living here, on your TIE if you are not
  • The social security number, which your employer needs to register you before your first day
  • A Spanish bank account for your salary
  • The padrón, for your address and the services that depend on it

Non-EU employees

The NIE does not give you the right to work. Non-EU employees need the residence and work authorisation that matches their case, usually prepared with the employer, and those files go to the Oficina de Extranjería rather than the police. In Madrid its main office is on Calle Silva.

Once the authorisation is granted, you continue on Line N: fingerprints, then the TIE.

What we take on

We match your documents to HR’s list, prepare the forms for the NIE or the certificate, search for the appointments and tell you what to hand to the employer, and when. If you also need a home, a school or visas for the family, Madrid relocation planning by AnchorLess picks up the wider move.

Questions about Starting a job in Madrid

Can I start work before I have the NIE?

Usually not: your employer needs your NIE and social security number to register you. Talk to HR early, so the first day and the paperwork line up.

Who applies for the social security number?

You can request it yourself, and many employers do it as part of hiring. Either way, the NIE has to come first.

Do I need a Spanish bank account?

Most employers pay into a Spanish or SEPA account, and opening one in your own name is simpler once you have the NIE.
