The toma de huellas: fingerprints for your TIE in Madrid
Once in Madrid on your visa or authorisation, reserve the fingerprinting slot for your TIE card (toma de huellas) by cita previa, and come with the EX-17 and the paid 790-012. The card is what shows your right to live in Spain from day to day: get this stop right and it follows.
Bring to the appointment
- Form EX-17, filled in and signed
- Your passport, with the visa or the resolution granting your authorisation
- A recent passport-style colour photograph
- The paid Modelo 790 código 012
- Any document your authorisation depends on, such as an enrolment or padrón certificate, if the desk asks for it
- The cita previa confirmation
At the fingerprint counter
An officer checks your documents, takes your fingerprints and hands you a receipt, the resguardo. Keep it safe: it shows that your card is on its way.
The card is not handed over that day. It is produced afterwards and you come back to collect it, which is the next stop on this line.
How we help with it
We fill in the EX-17 from your visa and passport, generate the fee slip, line up the supporting documents and search for a fingerprint slot in Madrid. Before the day, you get a checklist ordered the way the officer will ask for things.

Questions about TIE fingerprints
When should I book after arriving?
As soon as you can. Fingerprint slots in Madrid can take a while to find, and the dates on your visa or resolution set the pace.
Can I travel before I have the card?
Possibly, but check first: depending on your situation, you may need a return authorisation to come back without trouble. Talk to us before booking a trip.
Is the resguardo an identity document?
No. It shows that your card is being made; carry it together with your passport.
