Getting your NIE before you move to Madrid

If you do not live in Spain yet, the consulate of Spain responsible for where you live can take your NIE application, so the number does not wait for a Madrid appointment. Handy when a start date, a notary signing or a flat to reserve comes round before you do: the first stop on Line E for anyone still packing.

Who boards at this stop

This route suits people who need the number for one precise reason while they still live elsewhere: a hiring company drafting the contract, co-founders incorporating in Spain, a buyer reserving a property, a student whose landlord wants a NIE on the lease.

It gives you the number, not residence. EU citizens who then settle in Madrid continue down the line to the EU registration certificate, which carries the same number. Non-EU citizens switch to Line N for the visa and the card.

What the consulate will want

  • Form EX-15, completed and signed
  • Passport: the original and one copy
  • Evidence of the reason the number is needed: offer letter, draft deed, reservation
  • Payment of the Modelo 790, código 012, in the way that consulate indicates
  • An appointment with the consulate itself: each one keeps its own calendar

Consulate or Madrid: picking the stop

If you are already in Madrid, or will be soon, a police appointment in the city is usually the more direct line. If the date that matters falls before your move, the consulate removes the dependency. Consulates get busy too, so look at their calendar the week you decide.

When neither suits your dates, you can begin the NIE remotely through Gestoraz, a partner service built for people who want to start before they travel.

Questions about NIE at a consulate

Can anyone ask a consulate for a NIE?

The consulate route is for people who do not live in Spain. Every consulate sets its own way of booking and of taking the fee, so read its own page before you put the file together.

Will there be anything left to do in Madrid?

If you come to live here, yes. EU citizens register and receive the green certificate; non-EU citizens go through the visa and TIE route. The number itself stays the same throughout.

Does a consulate NIE let me work?

The number identifies you; it does not grant a right to work. EU citizens may work in Spain anyway. Non-EU citizens need the residence and work authorisation that fits their situation.
