Travelling mid-process: the autorización de regreso
With an autorización de regreso, a non-EU resident whose TIE is being issued or renewed can travel abroad and re-enter Spain; in Madrid it is requested by cita previa at the SACE on Avenida de los Poblados. Life does not pause for a card, and a family event, a client visit or a conference abroad may not wait.
When it is needed
It is typically used when a non-EU resident has applied for a first card or a renewal and needs to travel before the new card is in hand. It is not a visa and does not extend your status; it is permission to return.
Situations vary with the authorisation and the stage it has reached, so check yours before you book a flight.
Requesting it in Madrid
- Book the cita previa for this procedure: the Poblados SACE lists return authorisations among its appointments
- Complete the application form the office uses, and pay the 790-012 fee where it applies
- Bring your passport, the receipt or proof of your pending application, and evidence of the trip if you have it
- Pick up the authorisation before you travel
Our share of the work
We check whether your situation calls for the authorisation, prepare the application and search for an appointment around your travel dates. If the dates cannot work, we tell you before you pay for a ticket.

Questions about Return permit
Do I need one for every trip?
No. A resident with a valid TIE travels with it and their passport. The authorisation covers the gap while a card is being issued or renewed.
Does it work for any destination?
It is about coming back to Spain. Entering other countries follows their own rules.
When should I start on it?
Early. Appointments in Madrid can take time to find, so start as soon as a trip becomes likely.
