Collecting your TIE card in Madrid

You collect the TIE in person once it is ready, with your passport and the resguardo from the fingerprint appointment. After the forms and the fingerprints it is a short stop, but it needs the right papers and, in some cases, an appointment of its own.

Before you go

The card is produced after the fingerprint appointment. Check how the office tells you it is ready: some people are given a date, others check its status or book a collection slot.

Bring the resguardo from the fingerprint appointment and your passport. Without the receipt, the desk takes longer to find your card.

Check the card at the desk

  • Your name, spelt as in your passport
  • Your NIE: the same number as on earlier documents
  • The type of authorisation and the expiry date
  • The photograph and the signature
  • Speak up at once if something is wrong: corrections are easier before you walk away

After collection

Give your employer, your bank and your university the card details if they asked for them during the process. Note the expiry date and plan the renewal well before it; a return authorisation covers travel while a renewal is pending.

Questions about Collecting your TIE

Can someone collect the card for me?

Collection is normally in person, because the card is tied to your fingerprints. Ask us before you make other plans.

I lost the resguardo. What now?

Bring your passport and any confirmation you kept. The desk can usually trace the card, though it takes longer; tell us and we help you prepare.

What if the details are wrong?

Point it out at the desk before you leave. A card with an error has to be corrected through the police, and that is quickest on the spot.
