Questions on Line E: EU, EEA and Swiss citizens

The number, the green certificate and the two police addresses of Madrid, answered for people with an EU, EEA or Swiss passport.

As an EU citizen, do I need anything to live in Madrid?

Yes, once Madrid is home. Settling here means registering, and the EU registration certificate, with your NIE on it, is the document Line E ends at. A short visit needs nothing of the kind.

EX-15 or EX-18: which form is mine?

The EX-15 asks for the number alone, for instance for a purchase while you still live abroad. The EX-18 registers you as a resident and gives you the green certificate with your number. Living in Madrid points to the EX-18.

Where do I go in Madrid?

The police list the NIE assignment at the SACE on Avenida de los Poblados and the EU certificate at the SACE on Avenida Padre Piquer 18. The booking confirmation you receive says which one.

How is the fee paid?

With the Modelo 790 código 012, the state fee slip for these documents. You fill it in, pay it at a bank or online, and bring the proof of payment to the appointment. Our help, if you want it, is a separate private service.

My job starts soon. What comes first?

The NIE, by whichever route reaches your date: an appointment in Madrid, a consulate if you are still abroad, or the certificate if you already live here. Then the social security number, the bank and the padrón.

Can my non-EU spouse rely on my certificate?

No. They apply for a residence card of their own as the family member of an EU citizen, with the EX-19.

Is the green certificate proof of identity?

No. Carry your passport or national identity card with it.

Will the officer expect Spanish?

A few words at most, usually. A complete file does most of the talking, and our brief covers the handful of questions that tend to come up.
